Building Peace In Bawku Is A Collective Responsibility - Zug-Rann I McBashMedia

 


The overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Zug-Rann, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azorka ||, has appealed to the various ethnic groups in the Kusaug Kingdom to live in peace and unity with one another for development to prevail. He says any community or town without peace is always behind in developmental rating hence the need for Bawku to return to peace.

According to Naba Asigri, the conflict in Bawku has claimed so many innocent precious lives and property which is a great worry to him and therefore the need for government and other stakeholders to aid find a permanent solution to the canker. Speaking at this year's 35th Samanpiid festival which is celebrated by the chiefs and people of the Kusaug Traditional area in the Upper East Region of Ghana, the overlord further added that the excessive killing especially women and children in recent times in his jurisdiction is criminal and punishable by law.

Naba Asigri further reiterated that the claim that the violence in Bawku is a chieftaincy issue is a fallacy and should be disregarded and treated as a criminal case because he, is the only recognized and gazetted paramount chief of Bawku and the Kusaug traditional area. He called on the president of Ghana, Nana Akuffo Addo to consider creating a new region in the Upper East Region as well as making the Binaba zone in the Bawku West District a constituency to enhance development in the area.

This year's Samanpiid festival which was under the theme "building peace, the role of stakeholders seeks to create unity amongst all the various ethnic groups in the Bawku Municipality and beyond.

The minister for local government and rural integration, Hon Dan Botwe, who represented the President of the Republic at the function indicated that we are in a critical moment in Bawku while the country is battling with economic challenges and therefore the need for both factions to cease fire and embrace peace. He emphasises that Bawku was a viable town in the Upper East Region of Ghana but due to the conflict everything has come to a standstill.

He therefore appealed to the National Peace Council, the National Chief Imam as well as the clergy to intervene to bring a lasting solution to the conflict. He added that there is a great need for week-long fasting and prayers by religious leaders for the current situation in Bawku. 


The executive secretary for the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit on his part reiterated that peace is an ingredient for national development and the need for the government and other stakeholders to come together. He further advised the youth from both factions to lay down their arms and venture into meaningful activities that could earn them a living.

The 35th Samanpiid festival was attended by all the Members of Parliament within the Kusaug Kingdom as well as Municipal and District Chief Executives. Also in attendance was Dr. Dominic Mbang, Councilor and Deputy Mayor of Greenwich in the United Kingdom.
