Students of Akenten Appiah-Menka University of skills training and entrepreneurial development (AAMUSTED) who belongs to the Ghana National Association of Teachers on campus (GNATOC) have put their election of leader on hold stating irregularities as their major concern. The election was to produce new executives who will take over from the previous administration who's tenure had expired since 2020 but due to covid19 had to run till 2021, the elections held yesterday would have relief them off their responsibilities as acting executives.
The elections started as planned, all aspirants had their polling agents present at the start of voting, the voting was conducted by the electoral commission for the association with the help of the regional electoral commissioner. As voting proceeded, Some agents had the cause to complain about some irregularities they observed and they were addressed by the electoral commissioner. As time was far spent and voters were still many, an agent of one of the aspirants advocated for the addition of extra polling stations to facilitate faster movement of voters, his concern was agreed by all agents and an additional polling station was added to make the centers two.
When voting was approaching 5pm, the numbers kept increasing and the electoral commissioner had to take certain actions. The electoral commissioner asked that voting stopped and the ballot counted for those who had casted their votes already, the directive sparked heated argument between the electoral commissioner and the agents present. Some agents agreed the votes counted and others insisted all persons who were present before the 5pm must vote before the votes were counted. The electoral commissioner and some other leaders went for an emergency meeting only to return to nullify the elections and another date set for reelection, there was disagreement but all parties came to the conclusion that the elections postponed to a new date.
This action means the old executives whose tenure expired in 2020 will still run the affairs of the association before a new date is set for elections. Four vibrant persons are hoping to take over the chairmanship position.
