We can't spend all our lives being in the queues - By Justice Ali
My Brothers and Sisters, colleagues Young Democrats and partners in crime, I strongly believe the Electoral Commission of Ghana certainly want to play with we the ordinary Ghanaians health. In this global pandemic of Covid-19, the EC still wants to proceed with its desire to produce a new voter registration simply because she's been instructed to do so, irrespective of the consequences. If I may ask, what does it profit a nation to compile a new voters register and visit Covid-19 on its entire population? Has someone considered the social, political and economic cost implications of having to deal with millions of Ghanaians in isolation centres as covid patients waiting for the nonexistent treatment?
And by the way, what exactly is wrong with the current register for which reason this level of risk is being contemplated?
There is something that I am not getting with the intransigence of this electoral Commission Chairperson. My heart bleeds as to why she is risking our lives for the political interest of someone?
Jean Mensah and her group must be told that they are being foolhardy. They should bear in mind that, human beings prioritize their health over the political desires of politicians. This is to say that, the fear of contracting covid will inevitably scare millions of Ghanaians away from the registration centres. It simply means that only few people might go out to register if EC decides to do so.
Secondly, let it mentioned that, some of us are getting tired with joining long queues and wasting all our time there in the name of Ghana Card, District Assembly Elections, New Register before going to join another queue to vote in December. We can't spend all our lives being the queues
For crying out loud, this is the rainy season and most of us especially the northerners will be very busy on our farms and would certainly not have time to go for voters registration.
If the current voters register was that defective, then I wonder why we still hold the election of President Nana Addo as legitimate. Is it not the same register that Jean Mensah only recently used for the referendum to create new regions, did she not also use it for assembly elections? If there's anything wrong with the register, it must have been created by Jean Mensah and her team.
For the benefit of peace and harmony, we simply urge her to either use the current register for election 2020 or use the current voters card or birth certificate as one of the source documents to register for a new voters card.
It must be emphasized that, not all of us have passports, driver's license or the Ghana cards. Isn't it even interesting to see that, most of the source documents being contemplated by the EC have expiry dates? Does my citizenship expire? If no, why do you subject my citizenship and right to vote on a document that expires.
It appears to me that Jean Mensah and her deputy, Dr Bossman Asare actually feel insecured and are scared of the tenure of their office and livelihoods. This amplifies the fact that they're acting more in their personal interest than the interest of the nation.
The two of them shall be jointly and severally held responsible for anything that endangers the peace and stability of this country.
