An open letter to management of UEW E-learning - By Champion Raheem

The world for the past few months has been battling with unknown disease called coronavirus(covid-19). This disease has spread globally, Ghana is among other African countries which has also faced this pandemic.

This made the president of the republic of Ghana H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to suspend all social gatherings and to also close all public and private institutions, these institutions includes all universities in the country.Due to this lockdown of all tertiary institutions in Ghana, the various Heads of all universities in the country met to see the way forward on how to help students and lecturers to facilitate teaching and learning, by so doing theyagreed and develop a software to enhance academic excellence. All universities therefore introduce E-learning (LMS) to all tertiary students in Ghana. The LMS introduced was a very good decision taken by management
however, management should consider the merits and demerits of this LMS.

Management should therefore consider the percentage of students who stands to benefits this online LMS, also let’s consider students who do not stay or live in cities. As a student activist on campus I can’t mute on this issue whiles we are going through a lot of struggle with the LMS. I have critically and analytically read through issues and matters arising from
my colleagues on the online studies and I have followed the key concern of my colleagues, most especially how to access the university online platform and network. In fact, students are not against the effort’s management is putting up to enhance our academic excellence but our concern is that, management should
please consider the implications students will face.

Since the implementation of this software, students have really suffered and are still suffering. we therefore plead on management to put halt on LMS because it is not helping us at all. Let me use my department as a case in point where we were given an online Quiz and assignment to write. My question is what
happens to those who could not have access to the university online and those also facing network challenge what happens to them when it comes to Assessment? as we all know assessment play a key role when it comes to
teaching and learning. We therefore plead with Management to consider our reasons and put a HALT on E-learning. This is a matter of health issues, if we are not in good health conditions how do we concentrate, learn and write exams.
We therefore plead on management not conduct quiz, assignments and end of semester examination using the LMS. As we are home, I also plead on my colleagues to read their handouts given by lecturers before the suspension took place.

In fact, I must recommend H.E Boateng Samuel Clinton the SRC President of university of education, winneba Kumasi campus forcollaborating with other presidents from UEW campuses and speaking on our Sentiments we have shared since the implementation of LMS. I would also entreat all course reps to support SRC by giving them their views from their colleagues so that SRC can make a decision that will help us.
Please let’s stay home safe and adhere to the measures given by the Government and our Medical Doctors, together we support and fight this pandemic.

A young and practicing midwife who works at the Tumu Municipal Hospital saved the life of a woman in labour by the roadside. She had to work without any medical equipment but still demonstrated great skill to save the life of the unborn baby as well as the mother.    Madam Nawiadima Samankina was seen trying her best to deliver the baby by the street while balancing her own child on her back.
